Former Nigeria president Buhari recovering from treatment in “his London home” that he doesn’t own

Former president Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly been discharged with an undisclosed illness from a London hospital and according to some reports is recuperating in “his London home”.

Buhari, who was president from 2015 to 2023 always presented a frugal image to the Nigerian public and claimed in his asset declaration in 2015 to own just the following in Nigeria:

  •  Five homes and two mud houses, as well as farms

  • An orchard and a ranch with 270 head of cattle,

  • 25 sheep, five horses and a variety of birds

  • Shares in three firms

  • Two undeveloped plots of lands

Sources told Naijiant.com at the time that he owned a home in upmarket Knightsbridge in West London, where his wife Aisha and children spent most of their time. In all likelihood, this is where Buhari is holed up recovering from his treatment.

When challenged about Buhari’s London home on Twitter, his former media aide, Bashir Ahmed, replied unconvincingly: “Nope. He hasn’t” got a home in London. This begs the question, if he doesn’t own a house in London, why are they coy about where he is staying?

But the bigger issue is that after eight years of his misrule, he didn’t build a hospital in his hometown Daura that could treat him for whatever the ailment was.  He admitted while in power to using UK healthcare since 1978. This is all well and good for him, but he’s leaving his life in the lap of the gods in case of an emergency and he needs adequate medical intervention in the critical hour. He may have to put up with what the rest of the people of Daura have to endure.
