The court case playing out in Chicago over whether the person named “Bola Tinubu” that graduated from Chicago State University is one and the same as the president of Nigeria, took an interesting turn on Thursday when the president’s lawyers claimed that the university obeying a court order to release his academic records would do “severe, irreparable harm” to him.
What manner of person is “harmed irreparably” by their academic records being published? Tinubu’s desperation in fighting to stop the information being published is feeding rumours that the identity of the person that went to the university in the late 70s was stolen by the president, and that person could even be female. A revelation like this would surely cause the sort of “irreparable harm” to what’s left of the reputation of Tinubu, and may lose him the presidency – as presenting a forged document would be grounds for disqualification.
Nigeria, with its unhelpful reputation for corruption and advance fee fraud, would surely be plumbing new depths of reputational damage if the president is exposed as an identity thief , to go along with his links to heroin traffickers, money laundering, large scale looting and other crimes.
The court proceedings have been covered extensively by CBS News and now ABC 13 Eyewitness News are in on the act with an interview of David Hundeyin, an investigative journalist that has spent a lot of time cataloguing the life and crimes of Tinubu and is currently in exile from Nigeria in Ghana out of fear for his life.

There could be more to come when the FBI starts releasing information on its files about Tinubu in October. Politics in Nigeria was described as a “criminal enterprise” by Human Rights Watch. But the criminals running the country must be rueing their choice to put the worst of a terrible bunch at the top of the enterprise because there’s nothing criminals loathe more than the heat from too much public attention.
