The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has claimed that the proposed cash transfers of 8,000 naira to poor Nigerians by the President Bola Tinubu regime “robs the poor to pay the rich”.
The government claimed that it was launching a scheme to helped poorer households with 8,000 naira (£8) a month for six months to help ease the impact of the hike in the petrol price since the subsidy on petroleum products was removed by the new administration. Petrol was reportedly selling at 617 naira a litre today, with its knock-on effect on prices of goods and services. The monthly payments are meant to go to 12m households in the country but very little detail is known about how this will be delivered in practice.
The NLC were not impressed and roundly rejected it in a statement released today, signed by president Comrade Joe Ajaero.
The NLC statement is reproduced in full below.
