Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the separatist Independent People of Biafra (IPOB and director of Radio Biafra, has finally appeared this morning before the Abuja Chief Magistrate Court, in Wuse 2 in the Nigerian capital.
London-based Kanu was arrested by security agents on 17 October in a Lagos hotel and has not been seen since. He was arrested on charges of criminal conspiracy, intimidation and belonging to an unlawful society.
Last Wednesday the Department of State Security (DSS) were ordered by a magistrate to produce Kanu in court today. Since then a pro-Biafra group claimed that Kanu may have been killed in custody.
The IPOB has been campaigning for the southeast of Nigeria to become the independent state of Biafra and Kanu’s arrest prompted huge protests across the region.
Kanu stepped out a DSS van looking unkempt to cheers from supporters.
