Despite US troops’ presence in Nigeria, 1,000 Nigerians are being killed monthly

Kabiru Adamu, a security analyst, told Al Jazeera today that about 1,000 Nigerians are being killed on a monthly basis since December. This is despite the US launching missile strikes in the northwest of the country on Christmas Day last year, allegedly targeting jihadists,  and about 100 American troops deployed in the country since last month, ostensibly to “help train and support” the Nigerian military.

Trump’s not so smart bombs land in Nigeria & the reaction from some Nigerians is similar

Adamu said Nigerians are now asking why the attacks mainly in remote parts of the north continue despite US presence. Al Jazeera reporter Ahmed Idris acknowledged that kidnapping for ransom was now “an entrenched criminal economy”.  He estimated that about 10,000 Nigerians die every year from criminal violence.

Successive Nigerian governments have failed to address what he termed “the root causes”  of insecurity in the country – poverty, corruption and governance failure.

More US strikes, an increase in the boots on the ground, etc would do very little in terms of addressing those root causes.
