In Nigeria hunger stalks the land

Nigeria is facing a “hunger crisis” as food items continue to be beyond the reach for many families, despite claims made by the regime of Bola Tinubu often using what opponents see as bogus statistics.

A report from Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris today showed how much crisis there is in the country’s agriculture sector due to attacks by criminal gangs, euphemistically known as “bandits”. Such attacks have forced farmers off their land and the few that remain struggle with the costs of seeds and equipment.

The report claimed that about 35m Nigerians, especially in the north, face severe food shortages. This is worsened by the reality that Nigeria imports most of its food and the equipment needed to grow food. The devaluation of the naira has also pushed up prices while reducing the purchasing power of most Nigerians.

Many Nigerians now have to resort to eating smaller rations, skipping means and surviving on cheaper and less nutritious options.
