The Leader of the Conservative Party in the UK, Kemi Badenoch, was on the GPS programme on CNN hosted by Fareed Zakaria and claimed she couldn’t get Nigerian citizenship for her children because she is a woman.
Badenoch was born in London of Nigerian parents and claimed that British immigration policy made it easier for immigrants to gain citizenship unlike the country of her parents’ birth. She has been called out in the past for never hesitating to “throw Nigeria under the bus”.
Kemi Badenoch blasted for always “throwing Nigeria under the bus”
She also has previous form with lying about Nigeria.
She has gone too far this time, peddling what is patently a bald-faced lie that being a woman prevents her children from acquiring Nigerian citizenship. Chapter 3, Section 25(1)(c) of the Nigerian constitution makes Badenoch, born in London of two Nigerian parents, and her children, born in the UK of a Nigerian parent, Nigerian citizens: The following persons are citizens of Nigeria by birth-namely- …..every person born outside Nigeria either of whose parents is a citizen of Nigeria.
It is clear from this section that nothing prohibits Badenoch or her children from acquiring Nigerian citizenship or Nigerian passports and her gender is not a factor. She most likely has chosen not to acquire Nigerian citizenship for her children, considering how she relishes badmouthing the country.
The thing is, there is a lot wrong with Nigeria for anyone interested in the facts to criticise. Badenoch choosing to lie instead says more about her than about Nigeria. It also adds more evidence to our previous suggestion that she is suffering from an identity crisis and needs to seek professional help.
