Niger coup: South African commentator says Tinubu has no credibility to condemn

An analyst on SABC, the South African Broadcasting Corporation has questioned how President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, the current chairman of Ecowas, can question the legitimacy of the military coup in Mali when the legitimacy of his own (s)election victory is in doubt – as highlighted by Naijiant.com.

Niger Standoff: ECOWAS Will Not Tolerate Illegitimate Authority – Tinubu

Tinubu assumed leadership of Ecowas, the West African regional body, shortly after his controversial (s)election and while the results are still be challenged in the courts by the opposition. Some of his opponents have called his victory an “electoral coup”. This position was elaborated upon on SABC.

It’s not hard to imagine Niger’s coup plotters thinking it’s a bit rich of Tinubu to condemn the undermining of the democratic process after coming to power via violence, thuggery, vote manipulation, bribery and all manners of (s)election malpractice.
