Orji Uzor Kalu time as a Very Important Prisoner

Current senator for Abia North and two-term governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, spent six months in prison following a 12 year conviction in December 2019 for defrauding his state of 7.65n naira (about $20m). He was released in June from Kuje Prison after the Supreme Court annulled the judgment of the Federal High Court in May.

A close associate of the former governor has revealed to Naijiant.com how Kalu did his six month stretch.

The source said Kalu renovated the prison and used the office of prison officers to receive guests – a luxury very few prisoners could dream about. He is said to have a bought a huge generator for the prison and installed air conditioning units. His fellow prisoners were not left out of his largesse and they even saw improvements in prison food.

Kalu’s friends such as former senator Annie Okonkwo were regular visitors and doled out a lot of cash to ensure the Very Important Prisoner had what is known as a “soft landing”.

The source said that “normal service resumed” once Kalu was released from jail as the “bonanza” stopped.
