The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Ondo State governorship, Rotimi Akeredolu aka “Aketi”, has been sharing loaves of bread to voters in the state to induce them into voting for him at the forthcoming (s)election.
Section 124 of the Electoral Act 2010 bans voter bribery and inducement through gifts or money during elections, with a maximum fine of 500,000 naira ($2,500) or 12 months in prison or both.
But Nigerian politricksters ignore this law and regularly distribute food items to voters, popularly known as “stomach infrastructure”. There is clearly no chance of Akeredolu facing a 12 month stretch for trying to fortify the stomachs of voters.
Voters don’t seem to mind this blatant lawbreaking, as they see it as their only chance of enjoying the “dividends of democracy”.
