Lagos is bottom 4 in the Global Liveability Index 2023

Lagos, Nigeria is the fourth worst city in the world to live according to the newly-released  2023 Global Liveability Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The report ranked 173 cities around the world on a number of significant factors, including healthcare, education, stability, infrastructure and environment. The data was collected between February 13 and March 12.

Vienna in Austria topped the list as the best city to live in the world, with war-torn Damascus, Syria propping up the table as the worst.  Damascus has a war to blame, but Lagos, has long been heralded as being “transformed” by Nigerian president Bola Tinubu, who was governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and used his vast wealth and power to be the puppet-master to his successors.

On bottom half cities like Lagos, the report said: Even at the bottom of our rankings, cities such as Lagos (Nigeria) and Algiers (Algeria) have gained ground, with some improvements in their healthcare and education systems. Both are in countries that are energy exporters and have to some extent benefited from higher global oil and gas prices. Although corruption continues to be an issue, some additional public funding has been made available for infrastructure and public services, which have also benefited from the decline in covid cases.
