DJ Switch, a Nigerian celebrity and activist who witnessed the shooting of unarmed protesters by Nigerian soldiers at Lekki Tollgate in Lagos on October 20 during an End SARS protest, was interviewed by CNN’s Becky Anderson this evening.
It was a very emotional situation as the DJ, aka Obianuju Ude, recalled the events of that tragic night, with the crimes committed still being denied y the Nigerian authorities, with remarkable inconsistency.
The DJ claimed that she was still hiding in an undisclosed location. Some reports on social media claimed that she has been granted asylum in Canada, while other claims reported she was in Ghana. Her account of what she witnessed at Lekki Tollgate during the protests seems to have made her a target of the Nigerian authorities keen to prevent the truth from getting out.
DJ Switch told CNN that the Nigerian army, that were “supposed to protect us”, came at the protesters “all guns blazing”. The protesters waved their Nigerian flags, in the mistaken belief that this would protect them, but to no avail. She claimed that people were “dropping” from the gunfire and police officers from the SARS (Special Armed Robbery Squad) took over the shooting when the soldiers left the crime scene.
A CNN video published earlier had challenged the official account of what happened at Lekki.
DJ Switch went on to challenge Lagos State governor Jide Sanwo-Olu and President Muhammadu Buhari to tell the truth. She added: “Nigeria is a dictatorship with a democratic face”. She also dismissed comments by those rulers as only trying to “please the international community”. This was after they had used “force from the beginning” against peaceful protesters and infiltrated the protest with “thugs”.
